Wited-Out Syd Barrett Poster (1998)

Wite-Outs

"The Wite-Out Series is an ongoing project of transformative re-inscriptions of found, usually commercially printed, visual images using an ostensible process of additive erasure derived from the pre-digital business world. Each of the found images – which range from a vintage poster by underground cartoonist Vaughn Bodé to artist Félix González-Torres’ giveaway photolithograph reproducing portraits of all the gunshot deaths in America during one week to a bootleg copy of a limited edition fine art print of Art Spiegelman’s 9/11 cover for The New Yorker – is almost entirely obliterated using the little brushes and jars of opaque “correction fluid” used to adjust information in manually typed business documents.

Out/In was created for Jan Tumlir’s White Album exhibit, based on the Beatles album of the same name, and was assigned the task of addressing the significant role the LP played in Charles Manson’s apocalyptic philosophy. The five figures are based on the redacted crime scene photos from L.A. Assistant District Attorney Vincent Bugliosi’s bestseller Helter Skelter. The doubly erased physical identities of Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steve Parent, Jay Sebring, and Sharon Tate are reinvested with a limited form of dimensional presence."
