Untitle (detail) Clip Art Accumulation Series (1993)

The Clip Art Accumulation Series began as an enormous unique silkscreen that was recycled into the Signifying Monkey issue of Less Art, and subsequently became the strategy behind a series of large oil and acrylic paintings including Clear the Grid, Glaze, and Lacuna, as well as numerous smaller works, including Berlin. Clip art is a generic form of stock illustration, usually consisting of line drawings or cartoons depicting easily read clichés of people, things, and activities. The CAAS comprises an exploration of the threshold where this function is repeated to a point where it teeters on the threshold of unintelligibility, decoration, and maybe a new moiré-pattern level of semiotic function.
